Distorted Realities- a common thread in romantic suspense

When writing, I usually can be found playing in the field of paranormal romance with hot, sexy angels. I might also be found writing urban fantasy, dallying with hot sexy demons. But lately, you could just as easily find me writing contemporary romantic suspense with hot, sexy men.

I've written two romantic suspense novels so far. One, Distortion, is available now. The other, Finding Lost, will be available February 10, 2015. I had to ask myself, "Why the genre hopping?" Mind you, I see nothing wrong with writing whatever I feel passionate about, but I surprised myself when I found myself tapping into my passion for suspense reading and developing ideas for stories of my own.
Could I do it? I'd spent the last five years writing in fantasy worlds of my own creation, with rules and laws to live by that I wrote myself. In my stories, my law is the law. Well, back in the real world, there are rules and laws to follow that I must abide. Could I fit in the real world box? The answer was a resounding YES!

To my pleasant surprise it was those very trappings that gave me the most joy and the most challenge. Anyone who knows me knows I love a good challenge. In the real world, there are no angels to swoop down and save the day. There are no supernatural powers to bestow upon my main characters. If they're in trouble, they'd better come up with a plausible way of getting out of it. Sinister antagonists, to my greatest surprise, although very human indeed, can be more evil and more depraved, than any creature from Hell that I can conjure. "Real" antagonists have a delicious way of distorting reality, creating the tension and suspense necessary for keeping you on the edge of your seat. These distortions may make you feel disgusted. Maybe you feel even a little sympathetic to their cause, based on their history and pathology.

So, yes, I can write a great contemporary romantic suspense story as well as PNR and UF. After all, those stories are packed with suspense, as well. Remove the fantasy, and there is the romance and suspense. My love of reading romantic suspense has infiltrated the recesses of my mind and grabbed hold of the writer in me. I don't believe it's ever letting me go. I think I can live with that.
